The outcome
Three recommendations
Each one is realistic for a small charity budget, builds on what the cinema already does well, and comes with a target it can be measured against.
1
Letterboxd and TikTok for under-35s
The cinema left X for Letterboxd, the right instinct, but it needs a plan behind it.
- Weekly Letterboxd lists tied to the programme, like “Five Films to See Before Our Fassbinder Season”
- TikTok built around atmosphere: the gas lamps, poster giveaways, the queue on a wet Leeds evening
Target5,000 TikTok followers in a year
Costs staff time only. Tracked through follower growth, list engagement and monthly engagement rate.
2
A student membership campaign
Around 80,000 students live in Leeds, many in Hyde Park itself, yet the free 15–25 membership is underused.
- A six-week push over freshers’ and the start of term
- Students’ Union flyering, geo-targeted social ads and a student landing page
- Student ambassadors who promote it in exchange for free membership
The maths500 extra students × £7 = £3,500 earned income
Measured by new members, postcodes, repeat visits versus non-members, and social impressions.
3
A Community Curated Season
Strands like Africa at the Pictures, dementia-friendly and Bring Your Own Baby screenings already exist, but they aren’t joined up.
- An annual season co-curated with Leeds communities: students, older residents, LGBTQ+ groups, South Asian and African communities
- Turns community commitment from talk into action and brings in first-time visitors
TargetAt least two community groups in year one
Measured by participants, first-time visitor rates and audience feedback.
